if only i had known sooner
if only my parents had believed
if only i was born later
i would have been raised free
i see how it could have been different
i long to repeat childhood days
to spend them outside in all seasons
instead of text books, out to play!
if only i could live it now
the barefoot, the painted, the free
if only i didn't have homework
if only i could have been me
why does anyone choose the alternative
when their kids could truly be free?
instead of locked up in a building
from 8 in the morning till 3?
if only the world didn't work this way
and children could learn through their play
if only the parents weren't too busy
if only there was a way
i have seen the freedom of choices
the freedom of those younger than me
and i wish i could live my life differently
i wish i had known how to be free

I am a 20 yr old college student and I have been slowly introduced to the wonders of radical unschooling over the past few years and have
loved every minute of it! I have never felt so alive!
This is a poem I wrote talking about how I feel about unschooling.
I am Katelyn Stapleton.
