Parenting Freedom with Jasmine White
Are your own parents getting in the way of unschooling your kids? Do you ever catch yourself treating your kids the way your parents treated you even though you promised yourself you'd never do that? Does society's pressures ever make you question your parenting choices? What else prevents you from unschooling with ease and joy?
Tapas Acupressure Technique (TAT) is a leading edge holistic method that works in minutes to release beliefs, memories, worries, fears, even physical pain. Jasmine White, Certified TAT Trainer, has been teaching TAT since the mid 90s. Saturday, September 4th, she will show you how to use TAT to release those outside influences. She'll lead a round table discussion so you can share openly about the pressures of choosing to unschool your kids. Then she'll guide you through a TAT session to release those pressures. Expect to feel more relaxed and self-confident by the end of the TAT session. You will also be given the tools to use TAT at home.
Money Talks! with Jasmine White
What if you could actually talk to money?
What if you could ask a hundred dollar bill for financial advice?
Would you listen?
Every successful relationship involves communication. If you'd like success with money you need to talk to it. Join Jasmine White on Monday to learn an amazing leading edge technique to heal your relationship with money to increase your freedom and power for a richer fuller life.
This will be unlike anything you've ever done.
Punitive Parenting, Overt and Covert with Krenie, Maria & Isaac Stowe
Well ‘informed’ parents know by now that corporal punishment, threats and intimidation are not the tickets to emotionally healthy kids. But after 20 years practicing pediatrics, I can say without equivocation that most parents/caregivers, informed, enlightened and otherwise, are still embroiled in punitive parenting practices on a daily basis. Behaviorism and other covert forms of punitive parenting such as rewards schemes, “withdrawing privileges” and so-called "consequences for actions," are promoted by mental health and medical professionals. And many parents, in their quest for control, eat these suggestions up. This workshop will consider a radically anti-ageist approach to parenting as it examines the deep roots of punishment culturally, psychologically, personally.
Equality for all! with Krenie, Maria & Isaac Stowe
Equality as applied to conversations about race, gender and different abilities has become an accepted precept, at least in more progressive circles. But the vast majority of adults, including progressives, continue to accept and actively support distinct, discriminatory standards for youth. How are conversations about equality for those of different ages distinct? Is ageism related to sexism, racism and classism? Is it culturally specific? This session will begin what I hope will be an ongoing conversation about how groups such as ours, Rethinking Everything, can lead the charge for equality for all, including young people.
These two sessions will be co-moderated by Krenie Stowe, Maria Frontis Stowe(my mom) and (hopefully) Isaac Taylor(my son). As a lifelong unschooler, Isaac actively resists restrictive planning. He encourages me to do the same, though with very limited success. Hopefully on the day(s) of the sessions, participation will feel like the right thing to him. I, being a long term schooler, will certainly be there fulfilling my responsibility. But wait a minute; I always LOVE doing these sessions. Screw the responsibility argument!
The Anti-Power Workshop Immersion: Applying Taoist and Indigenous Ideas to Effect Lasting Change with Nick Cooper
Throughout civilization, oppression has inspired a rich history of creative resistance. Over time, though, resistance can harden and create new oppressions; systems of power can co-opt the methods and symbols of those who resist. Lao Tsu, in the Tao Te Ching, and Subcomandante Marcos of the Zapatistas both discover methods of recognizing and avoiding this pitfall, arriving at the metaphor of the power of water. Like water, oppressed peoples can take innumerable blows, only to later wash over their oppressors without weapons or bloodshed.
Seeking to compare authoritarian philosophies, structures and psychologies to those that are yielding, consensual, communitarian, or autonomous, Nick has also studied The Ku Klux Klan, Focus on the Family, Lyndon LaRouche, The Minutemen, Tom DeLay, Indymedia, Food Not
Bombs, Roberto Freire, Wilhelm Reich, and Hannah Arendt. Nick 's presentation examines oppression and the struggles of those who have searched for non-oppressive ways to escape it.
The workshop examines non-hierarchical systems, philosophies and movements, co-optation, systems of power and oppression, indigenous systems of justice, patriarchy, and resistance. It involves a participatory discussion as well as some group exercises.
The workshop includes theater exercises, and discussions. It starts with the metaphor of water in taoism and zapatismo, and then explores different examples of co-optation in history, in the participants current experience, and politics. In the second half, it examines Nazi sociology as well as my studies of far right groups in the South United States. Other topics touched on include: The garden of Eden story, Diogenes v. Plato, Jesus vs. crusades, the legacy of the US
civil war, anarchism, Gandhi, communism, Emma Goldman, The Spanish civil war, elements of fascism (brutality, nationalism, authoritarianism, unsustainability), and the sociology inside the CIA.
(This is a 6 hour session in two 3 hour parts over two days.)
Anybody who's ever mattered,
anybody who's ever been happy,
who's ever given any gift into the world
has been a divinely selfish soul, living for his own best interest.
No exceptions.

Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) with Dr. Joseph DuChene
Let's learn how to do EFT. The goal of this session is to learn the basics of EFT. We will go over the simplified procedure that should be easy for you to memorize by the end of the session. Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) is an emotional, needle free version of acupuncture that is based on new discoveries regarding the connection between your body's subtle energies, your emotions, and your health. EFT has been reported successful in thousands of cases covering a huge range of emotional, health and performance issues. It often works where nothing else will. Best of all, anyone can learn and use EFT and you don't need specialized schooling for it. We will teach the basic tapping procedure and provide a worksheet format that you can use on any problem or goal you would like to achieve. This class is a must for beginners and a great starting point for all the break out sessions. For more info on EFT, click here.
EFT Break-out sessions:
Law of attraction and EFT: How to hit the mark
There are many energies, emotions, and subconscious tapes that alter your ability to hit the mark when it comes to attracting what you want. One of the best ways to attract things into your life is to identify and remove these hidden subconscious tapes that you may not realize are there. Learn how the different kinds of interference can be overcome by using EFT. We will go over the attraction process starting with you. How are you going to attract anything if your emotions are sabotaging the process? How do you know if this is happening? What am I doing to do about it? Learn how to move through the attraction process using EFT, eliminating any interference that can slow or stop the attraction process.
EFT for overcoming illness: Body heal thyself!
Learn specific ways to use EFT to identify hidden emotions and energies that allow many illness to persisit. This material will provide relief for chronic illness, acute pain, phobias, and addictions. Learn the tapping points that eliminate pain fast. This is an extension of what we learned at the beginning session. Many people have used EFT to help overcome a wide variety of health concerns. In this breakout session we will focus on a basic understanding of the disease process and how we can use EFT to reverse the disease process. We will start by learning how to tap on the symptoms you have and move into a deeper understanding of the emotions and core issues behind them.
EFT Triggers, Attachments and Core Issues: The advanced Stuff
Learn about the subconscious tapes that could be running your life. Learn how to identify the triggers and find out how to get to the core issues underneath them. We will be using information from Bruce Lipton, Canice Pert and other researchers that help us understand these concepts. We will also explain and have The Rice Experiement there for you to examine. This experiment will give you a real life look into how Masaru Emoto's water crystals and the implications that affect you.
Triggers are our window into our core issues. We must first master our triggers before we can really go after our core issues. This session will focus on understanding triggers and how to recognize them and diffuse them. We will also go into what core issues are, how we get them and how to work with them using EFT.
Muscle Testing with Dr. Joseph DuChene
Learn how to muscle test and get good information. I will be teaching several simple tests that you can do at home. Learn how to test for stressors that affect your health. Learn how to use muscle testing to find emotional or energetic problems that you can treat with EFT. Learn how to find food sensitivites and allergies with muscle testing. Learn the one simple thing that will throw off all forms of muscle testing.
The pathetic truth is that teaching children what they need to learn for the future often becomes a program for living in the future,
and people end up living their whole lives as a rehearsal
for a time that never comes.
We teach our children to spend their lives preparing to live instead of living.

My Kids Don't Do Anything They Don't Want To Do
with Chris Parent
And why should they? Independent thought can only be had when one is allowed the freedom to be independent; to succeed and to fail on one's own terms; to own the experiences and information and move forward. As a whole-life unschooling dad, my kids have the freedom to make their own decisions in life. We do not force our kids to eat what we eat, when we eat, or go to bed at a particular time. They decide what learning opportunities they will pursue and even what constitutes a learning opportunity. Our family works as a unit with everyone having input to the decisions we make as a family. When we try to plan out our days (if we try to plan out our days) we take into account what everyone wants to do with their time, not just the adults in the family. By respecting everyone’s needs and desires, we maintain a peaceful environment at home because no one feels out of control or 'less than'. In this session we will explore what it means to support true freedom in our children, how these dynamics work for my family, and how they can work for yours.

Food Self-Reliance in a Backyard or Small Farm with Marjory
Just what does it take to be able to grow all (or most) of the food your family needs? How much time, space, and money does it takes? Which methods have high productivity, yet need the least amount of work, fertility, or water? How does this compare with simply wildcradting in a hunter-gatherer lifestyle? What can you do to work with the special challenges of Texas soils and climate? During this talk we will share what we have learned as a family that currently grows a significant amount of its own food.
If you put fleas in a shallow container they jump out.
But if you put a lid on the container for just a short time,
they hit the lid trying to escape and learn quickly not o jump so high.
They give up their quest for freedom.
After the lid is removed, the fleas remain impresoned by their own self-policing.
So it is with life.
Most of us let our own fears or the impositions of others
imprison us in a world of low expectations.

There is no Way to Peace - Peace Is the Way with Osie Adelfang
What do unschoolers and Palestinian rights activists have in common? (a topic close to my heart, as I am both!) We a living a philosophy we believe to be more joyful, more true to our ideals and best natures, and we are living it in the face of mainstream society - a majority who thinks the minority's vision of reality is at best, odd, at worst, dangerous. We are often asked "questions" that are more like confrontations, face hostility even from those who love us, and some of us face real danger from
people so upset by our way of being they bring violence or unwarranted intrusion into our lives.
When I talk to people about my book (about the plight of Palestinians), unschoolers are
most often open, inquisitive, and willing to challenge their previous thinking on the issue. When I talk to my activist contributors (my book is an anthology of Jewish women's essays) about unschooling, they ask questions like "how do you think we might take this concept into our society at large, and, what can we do for people living in poverty that would enable their kids to benefit from this? "
I am seeing that once you have allowed yourself the realization that there is more than one place to stand from which to look at the world, it is a much shorter leap to accepting that your previous point of view about any other topic might have a counter, more instructive, more truthful alternative. We can all benefit from being open and inquisitive of everything and willing to sacrifice lifelong beliefs--grieve the loss of them even, if they have given you a vision of yourself or society you can no longer hold onto--and move on. And in moving on, you become an activist for change, whether by action or by example.
I will read short selections from the book, Shifting Sands, in which the authors experience major paradigm shifts from their upbringing as proud Jewish Zionists to facing and understanding the realities of the Israeli government and its daily atrocities. I believe that reading people's
personal stories of change is often more of a "paradigm-shifter" for the reader than being confronted with facts. Other peoples' humanity and personal struggles draw readers in and nudge them gently toward questioning their own long-held beliefs.
We will then move on to unschooling, discussing together how our paradigm shift/s occurred (if we came from a schooling background) and are still occurring. Did you have an Aha! Moment(s)? Did you gradually move from one way of living to another? When did you see school for what it really is? Did your shift come through being in the school system? Through attachment parenting? Friends? Inner guidance? Start from any of these thoughts...If you have written/want to write a short piece (5 paragraphs or less) about the topic (maybe something you have blogged or emailed to someone, or just new thoughts that come to you), feel free to bring it! Otherwise, feel free to share as ideas come up. At the end, I would like to collect what each person brought (or has written at the seminar, it doesn't have to be typed!), and I would like to put together a little "R.E. Anthology" to give out (FREE of course) when I'm selling my other anthology at the RE marketplace. My hope is that each other's journeys will strengthen our own and give us comfort and confidence. And that maybe, just maybe, in someone else's hands, they can be a tool to gently coax your family or friends into challenging some of their beliefs and...who knowss what will happen?
Secret Lives of Spiritually Sensitive Children with Melissa Morrill
Many people agree that things are changing on our planet for our species. More and more children seem to be born with higher levels of sensitivity and higher levels of consciousness. Some have used the words ‘Indigo’ or ‘Crystal’ children to describe them, but despite the label, this is something we can no longer ignore as a culture. When a child is constantly inundated with sightings of angels and spirits, families soon realize there are not a lot of places to go for answers. Raising psychic children in the western culture turns out to be no easy task. We will be discussing one family’s experience with a psychic child and their quest for answers along with the importance of accepting these children and their innate wisdom.
The Genius Factor with Oren Harris
Part 1: Awaken your genius
We are all born Geniuses! We came into this world as infinite potential with capabilities that are unfathomable by our human minds. We were formless without definition, beliefs, or limitations about who we are or what we can be do or have. This natural state of being is where our genius lives and can be awakened by connecting to our natural flow!
Part 2: Living Your Genius
Many geniuses feel like the square peg trying to fit in the round hole or like they are taking the road less traveled … misunderstood by others. Many are labeled as having various dysfunctions or weakness. These so called “dysfunctions” are usually genius in disguise….strengths disguised as weakness!
The “success formula” for a genius is quite different than what is taught in school. Once you know it, there is no need to try to fit in to any system or rebel against those trying to change you.
This session is about effectively, passionately, and abundantly living your genius in the world…Being successful at being YOU!
It’s not just about “Thinking” outside the box… it’s about LIVING ABUNDANTLY outside the box…. It’s about creating NEW boxes …about limitless living!
Some of what this session may cover:
•Being a paradigm creator vs. paradigm shifter
•Aligning with your “True Value”
•Powerfully communicating your ideas
•Building your support team
•Communicating your value in the marketplace
•Staying in alignment with your true self
“You were born an original, don’t die a copy!”

School is not a good place for your kids.
If they are swarmed by friends and win every award the place can offer
it changes nothing.
From the first month of my teaching career of 30 years,
I realized that intellectual power, creative insight, and good character
was being diminished in my classroom and that indeed I had been hired
for precisely that purpose.
I was a clerk in a vast penitentiary; the rules and procedures were the guards.

Panel Discussions:
Drugs, Alcohol & Teens:
Allowing, Letting Go & Trusting the Process... or not?
This hot topic panel always attracts a range of folks, from those who are extremely comfortable with their teens' ability to choose their behavior to those who are not - and the reasoning varies widely. Also present are lots of teens and young adults with their own opinions and stories to share.
Teenage Liberation: Unschooling Teens
The teen years can manifest a wide array of challenges for self and family. Hormones, emotions, dating, alcohol and/or drug use, getting "serious" about education and life, this panel will help you with your doubts, fears and apprehensions as unschoolers. All topics are welcome and the goal is to give you the courage to face your fears, support your teen in their dreams and drive to self-direct their own life.
Unschooling in the African American Community
Let's talk about some of the unique experiences that unschoolers of African descent encounter.
Topics will include (but won't be limited to):
- How do we as African American unschoolers expand on some of the unique and positive aspects of our culture while embracing unschooling philosophies in our families?
- How do we balance the concepts of freedom with the realities of the world as our children learn to navigate in a world that is still healing it's racial wounds? How do we prepare our children without raising them from a place of fear and negativity?
- What are some specific ways that we use to unschool ourselves as African American parents?
- Ways that unschooling is perfect for African American families, and talk about ways we feel that unschooling may not be right for us at all and ideas for how we can reconcile these beliefs.
- Does unschooling really prepare our children for the so-called "real" world?
- What are some of the positive ways we have found to elevate our families, and nurture our children's self esteem?
And whatever other questions you bring. Let's grow together!

The Kids are Alright
Kids are born with a natural ability to follow their hearts, ask for help when they need it and always move in the direction of what feels right, powerful and important to them. This magnificent process often goes awry when the adults in a child's life mistakenly impose their own, often well-meaning, values and dictates on their child or teen's behavior - values and dictates that are products of their own dysfunctional or conformist training. Our panel will share their own big mistakes with their kids and teens and how they overcame them, allowing the kids and teens to heal, learn and thrive.
I Love My Life: On My Own Terms
Meet some exciting, empowered examples of those who have created self-designed lives they love living! They will share their ideas to help you do the same or support your child or teen in creating their own 'life worth living.'
